Tips to Become an Editor

Tips to Become an Editor

1. Mastering Grammar and Spelling

Spelling and grammar are two very important things in editing. Therefore, the editor must really master these two things. Without that mastery, editing will someday be a mess. Editing of manuscripts should follow the development of language and terms that live in society and in the world of science. Thus, editing is done on the basis of the actual language and applies at that time.

2. Train Thoroughness

Accuracy is the first “law of writing” to be imposed by editors. Do not let a word be left behind, back and forth, or one word or two. The word that exists in a sentence is the building of the paragraph and the building of the writing. The editor’s primary job is to examine all the words in the text, either singularly or in sentence. Everything should be accurate according to grammar and sense of language. Examination of sentences and words is important for strong and weighty writing. Negligence in word-writing will result in weakness in the writing. In addition, typos and errors will disturb readers who are diligently listening to ideas in a post. Therefore, the editor should continue to train his foresight in polishing the writing.

3. Understanding the Variety of Posts

Each writing has its own characteristics in accordance with the objectives of writing. For example, writing for academics, for children, for entertainment, and so forth. Before editing, the editor needs to understand the field of writing [and] the target audience, so that both the publisher and the reader are satisfied with the editor’s work.

4. Sensitive to Word Options

After understanding the type of writing the publisher wants and written by the author, the editor needs to be sensitive to the words of his choice. For example, editors need to be extra careful about the elements of SARA (ethnic, religious, racial, and intergroup) and pornography. Editors need to learn what’s worth publishing or not. In case of negligence in this case, of course, the publisher or editor will lose.

5. Working with Writers

The editor helps writers polish his work. Therefore, editors should not place themselves in the position of the scriptwriter. A good editor will have a good relationship with the author. In terms of script writing, basically the author is divided into three groups: novice writer, semi-professional writer, and professional writer. In terms of character, the author also has different levels of difficulty. By knowing the author, the editor will be more comfortable in consultation with the author when wanting to advise and change the script.

An editor will not stop to learn, because he will continue to discover new things as he works. The editor will find the time to think clearly, speak the language, and find a fresh phrase. Given the weight of his work, of course the editor needs to get a valuable appreciation for his struggle.
